Luckily, earlier today I've realized I've completely memorized how to draw Rarity's as well as Pinkie Pie's manes, both of which are the hardest manes to draw in my opinion. I found myself doodling pictures of ponies in art class today, when I should've been drawing the nude model, lol.
Yeah Rarity's mane is notoriously difficult to draw, I've heard a lot of artists say, though I didn't really have TOO much trouble with it, especially since I've only drawn her once or twice before, and both those times I was looking at a reference picture...so yeah, I didn't do AS good as if I were looking at a picture of Rarity while drawing, but I still did pretty damn good. Pinkie's mane was almost spot-on though, and I didn't draw it from any reference except a previous drawing I did of her, from earlier in my sketchbook.
It's actually a short-term goal of mine to draw the mane six as humans/human-like characters, but to preserve Lauren Faust's drawing style she used for them. I see the vast majority of humanized pony art just has them drawn as anime girls or more rarely as realistic women, but I wanna try something different and try to use the Friendship is Magic style to draw humans instead of ponies, especially preserving the unique way the eyes are drawn. I've seen how Lauren draws humans since I used to watch Powerpuff Girls when I was a kid, and I think she did the character design for that show, but she draws them with perfectly-round heads and the few times I've drawn humanized ponies I draw them with more realistic head shapes, but otherwise quite faithful to her drawing style.
Well...I was drawing the model as well, but it got too boring and difficult after awhile and decided to draw Pinkie and Rarity instead...why is it ponies are so much easier to draw than humans?! Geez...
Nothing wrong with using reference pictures, I use them all the time, mostly for poses and stuff. I wanna get into concept art and they SAY you have to be able to draw anything you want from memory alone to be a concept artist, but I'm just not at that level yet.
Traditional styled human ponies? As opposed to what? What exactly do you mean by that?
Oh, dear gawd...HANDS! I flipping hate hands because I can't draw them to save my life, though I AM getting better luckily, just slowly. Yeah at least ponies just have hooves so you don't have to worry about drawing fingers or toes, although I do tend to have difficulty drawing their back legs accurately, especially when in more complex poses.
Oh and by the way, I was listening to some Commodore 64 chiptunes a few minutes ago and your avatar was dancing almost perfectly to the music! Lol!
You wanna get into concept art too? Yeah it's a good field to get into, though I'm about equally interested in video game concept art and actual game programming as well, which is why I'm taking both an art class and a software class. You suck at backgrounds, you say? Yes backgrounds are hard, which is why I rarely draw landscaped backgrounds/scenes, mostly I just use "aged paper" backgrounds by staining sheets of paper with coffee or tea, baking or microwaving the paper to dry it, then folding and crumpling the paper and finally scanning it as a high-resolution JPEG file...the results can be pretty nice, like this: [link] (this was my first attempt at making such a background, and I think it turned out pretty well.) I used that sort of background for weapons and character ref sheets, since I don't really have the skill to make full-on scenes with characters yet.
Oh yeah, now I get it. Thanks. I drew Pinkie Pie in that way (cartoon style, but as a humanoid) a few days ago and I think it came out pretty nicely, even though I could've done much better I think.
Yes, ponies' back legs are difficult as all heck.
Well it was certainly dancing like crazy to the music I was listening to at that time. Who is that on your avatar, by the way?
Yea i enjoy drawing characters and designs. Though Story boarding is something else i wouldnt mind doing. Thats fancy, i need to do stuff like that instead of getting stock photos and all that noise. Nice!
It's my human OC, Ryett Volikov. My friend drew and animated it along with the others in our group "teh crew"
